Why the Pinion Size Matters
In a standard spiral bevel gearset, the pinion must be relatively small because it sits at the intersection of the two shaft axes. This limits the minimum pinion tooth count and therefore restricts the maximum achievable ratio.
Hypoid gears, by contrast, use an offset layout that allows the pinion to be:
